Advantages of Digital Mammography over Conventional Mammography

Memography

Digital mammography is a specialized form of tomography that uses digital receptors and computers instead of x-ray film to help examine breast tissue for breast cancer.Mammography continues to be the only imaging technique with the proven capability of detecting clinically occult breast cancer with a resulting decrease in breast cancer deaths. The primary reason to image the breast using x-rays is to detect breast cancer at a smaller size and earliest stage to interrupt the growth of theses tumors before successful metastsic spread.

Digital mammography differs from a film mammogram is that it uses a special detector to capture and convert x-ray energy into a digital x-ray image where there is no requirement of films, and the images are immediately available. It can be easily stored and retrieved and transmission of images is quick and easy. The development of digital mammography has opened up new opportunities for investigation that hold the promises of increased cancer detection with a decrease in false positive tests.BIRADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System Score)is a quality assurance tool originally designed for use with mammography. It was designed to standardize reporting. It sets up a classification for Level of Suspicion (LOS) the possibility of breast cancer.A score of 6 is given only after a biopsy has been examined and found to be cancerous; treatment would definitely be required.
