Bamboo is a best substitute of wood as raw material for so many woody products thereby mitigating the pressure on forest. It is one of the fastest growing and highest yielding renewable natural resource. It belongs to the family Poaceae. Bamboo has an excellent capacity to sequester carbon. In 21st century bamboo is called as green gold because it is becoming increasingly more valuable in global economy. There are almost 1,000 species of bamboo growing in the tropical and subtropical parts of the world except Europe and cold temperate areas. Bamboo can be converted into furniture, cooking utensils, cutlery, plates, bowl, activated charcoal, clothes and other fabric materials and even biofuel. Bamboo shoot is a very healthy and hearty addition to any meal. Bamboo flowers after long intervals that vary from species to species. When it comes to flowering the entire area of the particular species irrespective of the geographical location comes to flower. This behavior is called the gregarious flowering. After flowering, bamboo generally dies. What triggers the stock of bamboo to flower all over the world in one go is still a mystery.
