Elephant Foot Yam: a medicinal plant

 

It is scientifically known as Amorphophallus paeoniifolius, locally called Jamikand or Suran  and is an edible plant having a great number of medicinal benefits. The tuber and the plant is also taken as a vegetable in various parts of Northern as well as North East India. It contains Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C and Vitamin A, antioxidant, fibre, etc. It controls blood pressure and lowers cholesterol. It is beneficial for better skin, healthy heart, lungs and stomach. It is also effective for constipation and highly recommended Ayurvedic drug for the cure of haemorrhoids (piles).
