MEDICINAL USES OF NAGKESAR

The Nagkesar tree (Mesua ferrea). It belongs to the Calophyllaceae family. It is an East Indian evergreen tree and is often planted as an ornamental for its fragrant white flowers that yield a perfume. It is the source of hardwoodused for railroad ties. It is Sri Lanka’s national tree. Plant is commonly distributed in mid-hills of Eastern Himalayas and rain forests of Konkan and Karnataka in Western Ghat. Plant is also distributed in Nepal eastwards, in north-eastern India, Deccan Peninsula and in the Andaman Islands.Nagkesar or Mesua is an evergreen tree that grows in the tropical regions of Cambodia, Mynamar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and India. Known as the Steel Wood tree, it has the hardest bark of all trees in the world. Different parts of the tree, including leaves, flowers and seed oil are used for different medicinal purposes.
