Medicinal uses of Acorus calamus


The root (rhizome) of this plant (  Acorus calamus)     is used to make medicine. Despite safety concerns, calamus is used for gastrointestinal (GI) problems including ulcers, inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis), intestinal gas (flatulence), upset stomach and loss of appetite (anorexia). It is viewed as a miracle plant that cures skin diseases, cough, cold, asthma and digestive disorders. It was also used as body paint before battle for its stimulating and calming effects.  This is also an Aromatic plant and is widely cultivated as for aromatic oil.
