SILVER RECOVERY

Silver is a chemical element, whose atomic number is 47. Silver recovery is the process through which pure metallic silver can be recycled from old used X-ray film. The waste photographic film consists of 1.5-2% black metallic silver which can be recovered and used. The silver is very precious and important metal. It is widely used for photography, mirror, jewelry, industries. The recovery of silvery is very much beneficial for industrial, chemical purposes. The silver to be recovered may be present in different form like insoluble silver halide, a soluble silver thiosulfate complex, a silver ion depending upon the type of process and the stage at which it is recovered. Silver is a major cost component of the photographic film every film has a thin coating of the silver. During the formation of the image, silver transfers from the image portion of the film and some portion of the silver comes to the fixing solutions. It is called hypo fixer. When the amount of dissolved silver reaches at saturation level. No more fixing of the film done in this type of solution. The concentration of silver is hypo fixer solution varies from process to process and time to time. The silver present at the film during the film processing is reacted with hypo silver thiosulphate ion to form complex ion. During the silver recovery. Silver is removed from complex ion during the silver recovery. The silver is present in hypo solution in very high concentration and it is extracted from the solution.
