STENTS

Stents are small, strong, expandable tubes made of metal mesh which is placed inside the blood vessel when required. It is made of either metal or plastic. Now a days, stents with medication coating are used as it helps in keeping the blocked artery from closing. Stent procedure is mainly needed when plaque blocks a blood vessel. Plaque is a type of cholesterol substance which attaches to the walls of vessel. Stent procedure is a minimally invasive procedure. The stenting procedure is done in Cath lab. In Cath lab, long catheters are used, which are inserted into the vessels to find the abnormalities like arteriovenous malformation, stricture, aneurysm etc. The stenting procedure is almost same as angioplasty. In angioplasty, vessels are treated which are blocked or become narrowed. Initially, a flexible tiny, flexible plastic catheter is inserted through vessel. Then a dye or contrast is injected and images can be viewed on the display monitors. Then balloon catheter is moved and doctor places a stent to the blockage site. The balloon is inflated which stretches the vessels and opens the blockage. After this, the balloon id deflated and taken out, leaving the stent in place. After the procedure, symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath are reduced & a person can lead a normal life few more years with few precautions.
