Ultrasound Gel

Ultrasound gel is a conductive medium that creates a bond between the skin and the ultrasound transducer. The ultrasound sound waves have a hard time traveling through air, so the gel prevents any extra air space between the probe and skin in order to create a clear image. Its viscosity is same as ECG gel. Propylene Glycol is an organic, double oil compound frequently used for cosmetic purpose. It is used as a humescent in ultrasound gel, which results in retention of moisture. At tissue-air interface, more than 99.9% of the beam is reflected; there is no sound available for further imaging. The Jelly acts as a special aqueous conductive medium for the sound waves. It prevents the formation of bubbles between the transducer and the patient’s skin. The properties of the ultrasound gelly are-non allergic, neutral pH, harmless, non-staining, odourless, easily removable with tissue or towel easily removable with tissue or towel. The several features of ultrasound gel are that it is salt free (transmission of sound not electricity, thus no content of ions), alcohol free (no detergent, no alcohol), micro bubble free (manufactured with a special vacuum technology).
